Public Transport
Perth's integrated, efficient metropolitan public transport system is called Transperth (tel: 136 213; fax: (08) 93 20 95 45; e-mail: transperth@wa.gov.au ; web site: www.transperth.wa.gov.au ). Buses, trains and ferries display the Transperth colours and passengers can transfer between services on one ticket. Timetable and ticket information can be obtained at the Transperth InfoCentres, at Plaza Arcade, Wellington Street Bus Station, Perth City Busport or Perth Railway Station. The fare structure is based on eight zones; a two-zone ride costs A$2.70. Bus services operate daily 0600-1130. Central Area Transit (CAT) buses are free and operate three different routes around the City and Northbridge. Transperth trains run from Perth Railway Station to Currambine in the north, Armadale in the south, Midland in the east and Fremantle in the west. Ferries operate between the City at Barrack Street jetty across the Swan River to Mends Street jetty in South Perth.
DayRider
(A$6.90) and MultiRider tickets (A$22.95 for a book of ten two-zone tickets) can be pre-purchased at InfoCentres and newsagents.
Taxis:
Reasonably priced, meter-operated taxis gather at transport terminals, taxi ranks and hotels; they can also be hailed in the street. Booking by phone is possible with Black & White Taxis (tel: (08) 93 33 33 33) or Swan Taxis (tel: 131 388). Black & White Taxis charge A$2.70 hire charge 0600-1800 weekdays (A$3 all other times) and A$1.08 per kilometre. Tipping is generally not required unless sevice is exceptional, although rounding up to the nearest dollar is appreciated.
Limousines: A service is provided by Executive Limousine Company (tel: (08) 94 48 51 35; fax: (08) 92 46 97 84) or St George's Limousines (tel: (08) 94 70 10 08; fax: (08) 93 62 19 68). Hire is about A$100 per hour.
Driving in the City: Traffic moves relatively quickly in central Perth, except during very wet weather (rainy season is May to August), when a combination of caution and accidents slow the traffic down considerably. A traditional bottleneck, the aptly named Narrows Bridge linking South Perth to the city, was doubled in size in mid-2000 and no longer poses a problem; the new tunnel under Northbridge on the Graham Farmer freeway has also significantly reduced traffic through the city. Parking stations are marked by the CPP symbol and are located in Pier Street, Hay Street, Murray Street and Mounts Bay Road.
Car Hire:
All major car hire companies have offices in Perth including Avis, 46 Hill Street (tel: (08) 93 25 76 77) and Hertz, 39 Milligan Street (tel: (08) 93 21 77 77). The minimum age for hiring a car is usually 21 years. Rates start from A$65 per day.
Bicycle Hire:
Perth has many cycleways and is fun to navigate in this fashion. Bicycle helmets must be worn. Providers include About Bike Hire, No 4 Carpark, Riverside Drive (tel: (08) 92 21 26 65), Canning Bridge Cycles, 886 Canning Highway, Applecross (tel: (08) 93 64 17 33) and Boat Torque 2000, Barrack Street, Pier 4 (tel: (08) 92 21 58 44). Hire is around A$6.50 an hour or A$23 a day
